Under the management of Jacques Santini, Lyon finished second in the French league but won the Coupe de la Ligue, their first trophy after a 28-year drought. A number of players distinguished themselves this season. First among them was Sonny Anderson, once again the league's top scorer with 22 goals. The Lyon star won this award for the third time, and for the second time in a row.
