History
At the 2002 World Cup, Italy, coached by Giovanni Trapattoni, finished second in Group G thanks to a victory against Ecuador, a defeat against Croatia, and a draw against Mexico. In the round of 16, they faced South Korea in a match marred by intense refereeing controversies: a disallowed goal, the controversial sending-off of Francesco Totti for simulation, and Ahn Jung-Hwan's golden goal in the 118th minute sealed Italy's elimination. This premature exit remains one of the most controversial in the history of Italian football.
