Despite a promising start with a UEFA Super Cup victory, the club quickly faltered in La Liga, finishing a disappointing 7th and failing to qualify for the Champions League. They were eliminated from the competition in the group stage. This season also marked the early departure of manager Claudio Ranieri, who was replaced mid-season.
