History
 During the 2008-2009 season, AS Saint-Étienne had a very difficult season in Ligue 1. Having entered the UEFA Cup after their impressive previous season, Saint-Étienne reached the round of 16, where they were eliminated by Werder Bremen. In the league, however, the team struggled to avoid relegation and finished in a disappointing 17th place, narrowly escaping the drop. The season was marked by significant instability and defensive difficulties, despite some notable performances in European competition. This contrasting season illustrates the gap between European ambitions and the reality of the league.
